Alan Summers

By September 23, 2016News, People

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alan Summers on September 13, 2016 in Victoria, B.C.

Alan was President of our SWANA Pacific Chapter for a number of years in the early 2000s and led by example. We all enjoyed (and learned from) our many discussions on solid waste philosophy and management.

He was a very influential, respected and well-liked member of the solid waste community in BC. He worked for the Capital Regional District in Victoria for 31 years before retiring in 2011 as the Manager of Solid Waste.

In addition to his day job, Alan also volunteered for the Canadian International Development Agency where he helped lead the implementation of a self-sustaining, integrated solid waste management system in Tipitapa, Nicaragua.   In recognition of his efforts he received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012.

Alan was a great professional and a great guy. We will remember him for his humour, intelligence, caring, positivity and general love of life. He will be missed.
