SWANA is looking at implementing changes to the SWANA Excellence Awards and we are asking for your input.
A SWANA International Board (IB) subcommittee is re-evaluating the association’s awards programs, including the Excellence Awards. The Excellence Awards were launched during the 1980’s. Submitted award entries are reviewed and scored by SWANA Technical Division Awards committees and trophies are presented at WASTECON.
In the last four years, the number of entries has fluctuated. SWANA has reduced the number of award categories from 15 to 13 to eliminate those with little or no interest. SWANA has also tweaked category names and judging criteria to try to make it easier to enter.
Past entrants have been invited to respond to a survey with their ideas and concerns, but will very little response. SWANA would now like to get your input as well. Please let Sue Bumpous (sbumpous@swana.org<mailto:sbumpous@swana.org>) know by March 3 if you would be interested in serving on a task force to make suggestions on what comes next for SWANA’s recognition of organizational excellence. The plan is to put together a suggestions for the International Board Planning Committee meeting in April, and a final proposal for the International Board at WASTECON in September. The “new” Excellence Awards would kick off in October 2017 for presentation in 2018.
Time commitment: A few hours for several conference calls between now and the end of August. A few hours reading and responding to proposals developed as a result of those calls.
Optional: To get a better understanding of the current awards submission and review process, you may wish to serve on a technical division awards committee to review the 2017 awards submissions, which are due May 17, with reviews occurring in late May/early June. You MUST be a member of the division whose entries you review. Please let Sue know by May 1 if you want to serve on a review committee for 2017 and for WHICH DIVISION.
