Environment and Climate Change Canada recently released a discussion paper titled Reducing methane emissions from Canada’s municipal solid waste landfills. In this paper, ECCC proposes four regulatory objectives to reduce methane emissions from landfills.

Each objective is followed by key questions to which ECCC is seeking input from interested parties. The regulatory objectives are:

  • Objective 1 – Increase the number of landfills that take action to reduce methane emissions
  • Objective 2 – Ensure that landfills maximize methane recovery
  • Objective 3 – Achieve long-term emissions reductions through diversion of biodegradable waste
  • Objective 4 – Increase utilization of landfill methane to create low-carbon energy and fuels

The deadline for comments is April 13, 2022.  Comments and information can be provided via an on-line form or can be submitted to the e-mail address provided in the paper.
