About the Course

This SWANA certificate course is customized for BC and is developed by Dr. Ali R. Abedini, P.Eng. (SHA/ MethaneXE), SWANA Pacific – BC & Yukon staff, and the Vancouver Landfill Gas Operators. It will cover both design and operational principles applied in BC, and the must have fundamental knowledge for those working at landfills with or without LFG management systems in place. This course is also suited to those who may need more than just the basics for designing/ managing LFG systems and need to get more familiar with applicable regulations and compliances (provincial and the new federal LFG Regulations). The morning modules will detail the why and how to for LFG collection (modeling, design and operational considerations), LFG health & safety, the different systems being used for managing methane generated as MSW Landfills. These sessions will be led by Dr. Ali Abedini, P.Eng., Director of Methane Expert Engineering (MethaneXE) and Global Technical Advisor of the World Bank. A special guest from the ECCC may join the morning session to provide first-hand insights about the new federal Landfill Methane Regulations (LMR).

The afternoon modules will include hands on operational aspects including monitoring for process optimization and for regulatory compliance. The Vancouver Landfill Gas certified staff will provide an outline of the collection and monitoring system along with an on-site field inspection of the works and the monitoring regime. Operators with an interest in well head monitoring, system balancing, monitoring equipment considerations, flares and gas field safety will benefit from this on-site learning opportunity.

Participants who complete the training course and successfully complete a short Landfill Gas Operations and Management quiz will receive a Certificate of Completion issued by SWANA Pacific – BC & Yukon Chapter.
