SWANA Safety

SWANA Pacific Chapter Safety Ambassador

SWANA Pacific is pleased to introduce our Safety Ambassador, Kevin Johnstone.

Kevin has been involved with SWANA for 7 years, first as a student member then as a YP and also the YP committee head. He has been working as an Environmental Engineering Technologist for Ecowaste Industries for 4 years. He became involved with SWANA after connecting with some members at a networking session after a conference. Those connections helped Kevin complete his undergraduate thesis at BCIT, graduate, and find his first job in the industry doing waste audits.

Kevin values SWANA as an organization that allows him to continue to make new connections, learn about the industry, and participate in conferences. He looking forward to serving the SWANA BC/Yukon chapter throughout his career in solid waste.

SWANA Fatalities Report for the First Half of 2021

SWANA has issued a press release announcing industry fatality numbers for the first half of 2021, reporting that on-the-job worker fatalities have decreased by 50% in 2021 compared to the previous three years in the United States and Canada. While this is encouraging news, third party accidents, where a member of the public is killed in a solid waste related accident, remain the same in 2021 compared to previous years.
