ABOUT THE COURSE

The Solid Waste Basics training course provides a general overview of the systems in place to manage Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) within Metro Vancouver. It can also be tailored to other regional districts upon request.

Who Should Attend?

The Solid Waste Basics training course is intended for young professionals and those new to the industry, as well as front line staff that answer questions related to solid waste services and/or facilities. This training course is geared for those people who do not work directly in the Solid Waste Management field. It does not require any prior knowledge of solid waste, and only contains rudimentary math and science content.

Course Content

This ½ day course will provide a general overview of integrated solid waste management in Metro Vancouver. Lectures, group discussion and exercises will be used to cover the following topics:

  • Introduction to Municipal Solid Waste (MSW)
  • What it is and isn’t
  • Sources, amounts and composition of MSW
  • MSW from Homes and Businesses: Collection, Transfer and Recovery
  • Collecting MSW for disposal
  • Collecting and processing recyclables
  • Collecting and processing organics
  • MSW from Construction and Demolition: Collection, Transfer and Recovery
  • Collection, prevention and disposal of construction and demolition waste
  • Planning and Public Education
  • Food scraps
  • Clothing waste
  • Illegal dumping
  • Asbestos
  • Hazardous household waste (HHW)

What is the Refund Policy?

A full refund minus a $75 administration fee will be issued prior to 30 days (close of business April 20, 2020) before the Solid Waste Basics Course. Full charge applicable thereafter. Although refunds will not be issued within 30 days of the training which the participant is registered for, substitutions ARE allowed. Please call or email request to [email protected]

Instructors

  • Marcel Pitre – Division Manager, Metro Vancouver  Marcel Pitre is a professional engineer with 20 years of experience in a variety of civil and environmental engineering endeavors. He has been working at Metro Vancouver for over 12 years principally in the solid waste and recycling field. Currently the Division Manager for Policy and Facility Development in Metro Vancouver’s Solid Waste Services, he is responsible for new facility implementation and developing the utility’s operating and capital budget strategies. Prior to joining Metro Vancouver, Marcel had worked as a night shift gas station clerk, bartender, plumber, touring musician and a most recently, a consulting engineer. Since 2008, he has taught solid waste management at the BC Institute of Technology as a part-time instructor. He is a registered Professional Engineer in BC.
  • Andrew Marr – Director of Solid Waste Planning, Metro Vancouver  Andrew Marr has been with Metro Vancouver for 28 years, mostly in solid waste but with some years in water, liquid waste and environmental management. He is currently the Director of Solid Waste Planning, overseeing a group of engineers, planners, and others to implement the 3Rs activities in the region’s solid waste master plans. This includes the policies (e.g. regional disposal bans and regulations, input into provincial and national waste reduction and recycling policies) and programs (e.g. input to regional public education and behaviour change campaigns, interfacing with provincial EPR programs, participation in Canada-wide waste programs such as co-chairing a Plastics Advisory Panel for the National Zero Waste Council). Prior to joining Metro Vancouver, Andrew spent 7 years in the private sector in rechargeable battery R&D, and in hazardous waste management. Since 2004 he has also taught waste reduction and recycling technology at the BC Institute of Technology. He is a registered Professional Engineer (Environmental) from the University of BC. His spare time interests include hiking, travel and martial arts.
