Gareth Earl
Gareth is completing his final year in Environmental Engineering at UNBC/UBC. After several years travelling and working with Canada World Youth, Gareth obtained a diploma in Civil Engineering Design and Drafting in Alberta and worked briefly in subdivision design. He returned to school, initially in engineering studies at Thompson Rivers University and transferred in second year to the Environmental Engineering program offered jointly by UNBC and UBC. He has maintained an 85% average and has spent the last two summers working for Conestoga-Rovers and Associates in landfill design and operations. He is hoping to continue in landfill design and operations and to make solid waste more part of the community than “out of sight, out of mind”.
Suzanne Fordyce
Suzanne is in the second year of Environmental Planning at Selkirk College’s School of Renewable Resources where she is maintaining an A+ average. Her school projects have included design of a compost pick-up system for multi-family dwellings in Castlegar, a baseline audit for the college’s environmental footprint and a grassland restoration project. She and her children recycle everything and maintain a worm compost. She hopes to become a consultant working to retrofit existing developments so they are more sustainable and environmentally responsible.
Candice Benner
Candice is in the second year of Environmental Planning at Selkirk College’s School of Renewable Resources where she is maintaining an A average. She has been active in school and community groups dealing with bear/garbage/compost issues, introducing and obtaining funding for on-site composting at the college, and discouraging the use of bottled water. Her summer work at the Trail wastewater treatment plant introduced her to the connections between solid and liquid waste management which she would like to pursue in future work and education.
